Being understood is what counts

The ICAO language proficiency requirements (Level 4 for international operations) don't ask pilots or controllers to sound like a native speaker. They ask for pronunciation that doesn't get in the way of understanding. That's exactly what janqua measures.

Aviation English is its own target in janqua. Your natural voice is respected; what gets flagged is what a listener could mishear: a number, a heading, a call sign. Sounds that rarely cause misunderstanding, such as "th", aren't counted against you.

There are two aviation targets, one for each side of the frequency. Pilots practise readbacks, requests and reports. Controllers practise what they say: clearances, instructions, traffic information and non-routine calls. Both share the numbers, the spelling alphabet, call signs and standard words.

Pilot and controller benefits

  • Practice built on aviation radiotelephony from your side of the frequency, with standard ICAO pronunciations such as "tree", "fife" and "niner"
  • An intelligibility result: how much of what you said came through clearly
  • Sound-by-sound feedback and a clear next step
  • Fluency feedback on speaking rate and pausing
  • Short, self-paced sessions on your own device, between duties or at home

Training manager benefits

  • Each pilot's or controller's results and progress over time
  • Which sounds a group finds hardest, to focus classroom time

How janqua supports ICAO language proficiency

janqua is a training and preparation tool. You use it before your language proficiency assessment, not instead of it.

Before

Find the pronunciation and fluency weaknesses most likely to affect your assessment, and practise them.

The assessment

Conducted by an authorised examiner under your regulator's rules. janqua does not award or predict ICAO levels.

Between assessments

Maintain your Aviation English proficiency through your career.

The ICAO scale rates six areas: pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interaction. janqua works on pronunciation and fluency.

Working with flight schools, operators and air navigation service providers

We'll run a small number of aviation trial programmes with flight schools, airlines, air navigation service providers and training organisations. See our Foundation Partner details for more information, including how to sign up for a free trial.
